Penguin Corps

Welcome to the Aspen Academy Penguin Corps!

What: Linux Computer Club

Grades: 5-8

Led by Middle School teacher Mr. Keroff, the purpose of this club is to educate students in the foundations of Linux and open source software and have fun doing it. Kids will learn about the insides of computers, how to install all of the software, including the operating system, and will apply that knowledge by refurbishing used computers for people in need. This is only the second middle school Linux club in Minnesota, and one of only a handful in North America. Students taking part will not only have fun, but also learn the basics of an “in demand” field of computing that most major companies are looking to hire in. Kids will be expected to attend with a willingness to learn, experiment, and try something new.

Within the last year, the club has repurposed over 300  computers to give to the community. As leaders in their field, students presented at:

  • Minnesota School Board Association Leadership Conference, 2019
  • DrupalCon Global Conference, 2020
  • Minnesota Department of Education Webinar, “Strategies for Acquiring and Effectively Using Technology,” 2020
  • Sourcewell Impact Education Conference, 2020
  • Interviewed by Brian Lunduke, Deputy Editor of the Linux Journal, 2020
